Irvine: A portrait of an innovative city in the heart of Southern California

Irvine, one of the cities in Orange County, California, has a unique history of development and growth. This city, now known as an attractive place to live, study and work, was once just a piece of uninhabited land.

Origins and Development
The area where Irvine is now located was home to the Gabrielino Indians long before the arrival of Europeans. In 1769, a group of Spanish explorers led by Gaspar de Portola became the first group of Europeans to visit the area.

In the 19th century, the land on which Irvine was later founded was part of a large ranch owned by the Irvine family. James Irvine purchased the land in 1864, and after his death his son, James Irvine, Jr. began planning the development of the vast tract of land that became known as Rancho San Joaquin.

The founding of Irvine
Irvine was officially founded in 1971, and since then it has evolved from an agricultural area to a city rich in culture and history. In its early days, Irvine developed as an educational center. In 1965, the University of California Irvine (UCI) was founded here, and today it is one of the leading universities in the country.
