The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck at a depth of about four miles. Its exact magnitude and epicenter will be revised in the next few hours when seismologists refine their calculations. It is noted that shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones. Because they are closer to the surface.

According to preliminary reports, among the cities that felt the weak tremors were Avalon (population 3,800) located 33 miles from the epicenter, Oceanside (175,700) at 34 miles, San Clemente (65,500) at 35 miles, Carlsbad (113,500) at 35 miles, Encinitas (62,900) at 37 miles, Laguna Niguel (65,800) at 38 miles, Newport Beach (87,100) at 43 miles and San Diego (1,394,900) at 48 miles.

Fortunately, there are no reports of casualties or property damage yet.

This reminds us that earthquakes can occur at any time. Therefore, it is important to have a plan of action and be prepared for unforeseen situations.

The Volcano Discovery website is asking anyone who felt the tremors to report it. "If you felt this earthquake (or if you were near the epicenter), please share your experience. Send a short "I felt it" report! If you did NOT feel it, even though you were in the area, report as well. Your input is valuable for earthquake science, seismic hazard analysis, and mitigation measures," the request reads.
